Award Winning CBA - The Hive

The hive is constructed from golden sassafras veneered onto a light-weight substrate and consists of approximately 350 individual hexagonal pieces. Each hex piece was designed to fit together at a specific angle, to allow them to piece together in an arch shape. The geometry to achieve this arch construction was tricky, with many mathematical calculations and prototype development.

Construction also required a novel approach. We built a large supporting jig which sat underneath the arch construction. As each row of hexes was added to the arch, the template was rolled further along. This was repeated for the entire length of the structure.

The result is an award winning piece of joinery - recipient of the Australian Timber Design Awards for 2012, in the category of 'furniture and joinery'.
